Thank you for all the hard work everyone is putting in to help us learn. I hope you were able to pick up your items from the school last Friday. I included their math book for any practices you would like to do with them. Many of the students had added stickers and personal touches to their pencil boxes so we wanted them to have those. If you are needing additional help for your student, I am glad to meet on Zoom and help talk them through any of the work or to support you during this difficult time. We are trying to come up with ideas to help our students be able to still enjoy their end of year. We are keeping attention on social distancing unless the guidelines change before school is officially out for the summer.
To better handle the technology-assistance requests that you may have as a result of distance-learning expectations, the Information Technology Department has created a new Field Tech Hotline at 801-826-5200. The hotline will be dedicated to supporting parents and students and staffed Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Anyone needing to request help outside of those hours may still use the online request form available on the CSD homepage.

Welcome to a new week. I hope your students and you are doing well; staying healthy. We had some tears last week with the announcement of not being able to physically return to school. We are actively working to try and find ways that we can still celebrate our 5th graders and their hard work. Please remember that both Mrs. Kirk and I are available by email or open office hours daily if anything is needed by you or your student. The district IT department has put together a form at this link to help with any technology issues that may be a bit more complicated. This week, I am starting to offer Rockin' Roots game time on Tuesday and Thursday at 1PM. It is the students choice to participate and should last about 30 minutes. Remind students (as explained at the beginning of the year) that they are responsible for checking and completing work for both Mrs. Kirk and myself to further prep them for middle school.

What a weird time in the world! Students are home for safety and the district is putting together some packets for helping them work and continue learning the next couple of weeks. Students can still access their google classroom and other learning sites we use in school. Many of them are also inked in the "Additional Sites for Learning" page on this weebly. We know that this is greatly disrupting many lives and making it an uncertain time for the students. Let them know we are thinking of them and miss having them in our classrooms - it is quite boring to sit in a room by yourself with no one to teach and interact with during the day. Suggestions: keep on a school schedule as much as possible, find many opportunities for them to try and see new things - many museums and zoos are offering virtual field trips. Sleep, eating regular meals, and talking with their families will bear positive outcomes during these uncertain times of their lives. I will stay in contact as much as possible and share information with you as soon as we receive it. Thank you for all you are doing and will be doing the next few weeks.
Info for your students: I have added the last 2 weeks of latin/greek roots to this site. This time could also be used to create your project for the monthly history challenge - if you are choosing to complete the challenge.

Here we are starting another Spring Week. Students are testing on Electricity in science and then starting the Magnetism unit. In math, we are testing on Tuesday on Measurement Conversions in Customary and Metric. Our next unit is on Representing and Interpreting Data. We use lots of In and Out tables, finding patterns, and being able to explain what the data means. We are also reviewing Order of Operations and graphing coordinates. A few more weeks of new roots and then we will be studying for our comprehensive final. They need to score at least 90% in order to participate in the pizza lunch party. Test will be given on May 8 and the lunch award on Friday, May 15, 2020.
Calendar:
March 13: Chess Club; Reaction Time
March 16: Spring Pictures; Battle of the Books
March 20: Chess Club
March 24 & 26: Keyboarding Assessment
March 25: Repertory Dance Assembly
March 27: Chess Club; DEAR & PJ's

Parent Teacher Conferences and Book Fair. Thank you for signing up for a time to talk about the needs of your student. Wednesday morning is the goodies and grown-ups given by the PTA. Come and grab a quick breakfast treat and check out the books with your students. We are testing on volume in Math this week and beginning our Measurement Unit - using the metric and U.S. systems. In science, we have a special visitor this week to help the students understand and build circuits; both parallel and series. On Thursday, students that have earned points through their behavior will be able to participate in several activities. If they haven't earned the party then they will be doing work in one of the class rooms. We have only a few more weeks of new roots to learn and then we will have several weeks for final review time for the Final Rockin' Roots Test. Reminder: 90% needed to participate in the pizza lunch.

Snow Day is made-up! A brand new week to learn together has begun. Please remember to sign up for your Parent Teacher Conferences for next week Feb 26 & 27. We are working on Volume of cubes, rectangular prisms, and irregular shapes that can be broken up into rectangular or square prisms. In science, we are working on electricity with this week concentrating on static. Sorry, if any of you received quite the jolt. They were given an assignment to go home and see how much static they could build up to shock themselves or someone else. (This didn't work well in our room due to the very old carpet). Reminder: if your student misses any school due to vacations or illness they need to come to me for their work that needs to be made up in a timely manner.

Valentine's Week - if your student would like to bring Valentine's or a treat they may do so, but it must be for the whole class (homeroom). We will pass these out and share after lunch on Friday, the 14th. Due to students behavior issues we are having a grade wide incentive program. On Thursday, February 27th, the 5th grade will be having a grade-wide behavior incentive party. They will have a choice between electronics, games, and outside with one room reserved for work completion time for those that do not earn the party. Your student will keep track of tally marks given to them for following expectations. They will need to earn a majority percentage of the marks over the course of two weeks in order to attend. Families of students we do not meet requirements will be notified prior to February 27th. On Monday, we are testing Topic 9 in math - Dividing Fractions. We are also beginning our science unit on Electricity. We have a field trip on Tuesday to Abravanel Hall to listen to the Utah Symphony. We are asking students to dress nicely for this activity. As I am sure you have heard from the district, we will be in session on Monday, Feb 17 to make up for our snow day. This will be a regular schedule.

What a way to start the week - SNOW DAY! We had a good visit at the middle school today. All the principals are telling us to have the students fill our registration forms for any school they may be thinking of attending. It is much easier to remove a student from a class then to get a student their elective choices later. We are working on completing our fraction topics in math and beginning electricity and magnetism in science. All students will be participating in a class spelling bee during their ELA section on Friday. Please return permission forms for the symphony field trip. As this is out of the district boundaries, we are not allowed to take the students without a signed permission slip. We are asking students to dress in their best outfits for this event; especially no ripped jeans, shorts, joggers, or advertising hoodies/T-shirts.

Welcome to a new year. Our week started out rough and surprising, students and teachers are making adjustments due to a water leak in our area of the school. We are glad that the students are willing to go with the flow and help us adjust our teaching. Students have their US States quiz on this Friday. Science presentations are next week - I am excited to hear what they have been learning and trying. You are invited to their presentations, hopefully we are back in our room for them. LOL! We are working on multiplying fractions in math class. In science, we are continuing to study landforms and our changing earth. FYI: They have homework this week.

Thank you for getting your BizTown forms and money turned in on time. The students are always excited for this field trip. If you signed up to volunteer, we will definitely be using you that day. All jobs will be made this Friday and we will email out information to you. In math this week, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Students will be ready to test next week before leaving for holiday break. In science, everyone should have received an email with the Sign-up attached to pick a time for their student to give their presentation. Please sign up ASAP. If the student doesn't have a time picked by Christmas Break I will assign one of the open spots to them. Hopefully your student is working and recording data for the science experiment. Reminder: they do not make a poster, they put all the information into a google slide presentation (an outline has been shared with them in their google classroom). They can then add their own colors, animations, and make it represent themselves. They use this as the basis for their presentation. Parents and family are invited to attend these presentations.

On to a new month and lots of learning. Students are working on division with 2 digit divisors and 4 digit dividends. They have been taught multiple ways to do the work, so that they can find the method that makes sense to them. We are especially concentrating on the standard algorithm this week. We have also introduced finding mean, median, range, and mode to them. Their science experiments should have been decided and be working on background research this week. Parents, we need you to fill out the U of U paperwork students took home on Monday. The district requires this to be completed, signed, and turned in before the experimenting process - thank you for your help. We just finished our section on Matter: Physical and Chemical Changes in science and will begin Earth Changes, Landforms, and Severe Weather/Storms next week. Reminder that all Latin Roots have their own page on this site. Novembers US History Challenge: Recite the 9 Supreme Court Justices.

Students did well on their District DWSBA in math. We are now working on division and different methods of dividing. In science our main focus is starting the science experiments and finishing Matter in class. The science fair paperwork should have been brought home yesterday. This includes a timeline and documents to help the students through the scientific method steps. We are doing a small experiment in class together to help the students see how to follow the steps and set up a google slide presentation. In google classroom, each student has a basic template for the science fair presentation which they can then make individualized to their experiment and aesthetics.
The timeline provided is a framework to help them stay on schedule to have a completed project in time. I have left about 5 weeks for experimenting and collecting data. They should bring each section into class and have me sign it off. Some students have chosen to work with a partner, both people need to fill out the paperwork and get it approved for each section of the experiment, but they will only create one presentation together.
You should have already returned the parent information letter to school and the proposal for their project is due this Friday. Next week, they will receive a U of U letter that must be signed and dated before the experimenting can start.
Parents will be invited to the presentations during the week of Jan 13-17. There will be a sign-up genius go out right before the holidays so that you can sign your student up for a time slot.
Calendar:
Oct 31: Halloween Parade 8:45AM; Party 2PM

We are starting the week off with a test on Topic 4 in math. We will then review Topics 1-4 for our first district DWSBA. Most of the students are doing well with keeping up on their homework, thank you for your support in this. In SALTA, we do need to start pushing the rigor and speed of the class - some students may get a little frustrated due to having some unfinished work become homework. Please keep in contact with me if you see this causing problems for your student. In science we are working on matter and its changing states. We focus on the 3 main states: solid, liquid, and gas. They also will learn about the Law of Conservation of Mass.

This week students are starting Topic 2 in math; adding and subtracting decimals using algorithms, models, compensation, and rounding. In science, we are focusing on the scientific method and how to identify the variables. Students learned 5 new roots today, so 15 for the year so far. Those can be found on the Rocking Roots page to study at home. Students should have brought home a help packet for the Singapore Math Questions they will start getting in their homework next week. I expect students to put in good effort and try several ways to solve the problem; if they absolutely can't get it; that is okay -- we will discuss on Fridays with partners and help each other learn. Parents, you are welcome to support them just make sure they understand the method of the work being completed. These problems will be our math discussions on Friday, as there are various different methods students will use to figure out their answer.

We have kicked off a great year. Some students came in very tired this morning, please continue to support them getting back on schedule and going to be early enough to make it through our school day. This week we are going full steam ahead into our procedures, rotations, and boosters. Students have their first week on homework, information on the first Social Studies Challenge, and ready to begin work in math. Our first topic is about exponents, place value, and working with decimals. For science, the district has us do a 4-5 week course on keyboarding in the 5th grade for the first section. We will also be learning and reviewing the scientific method to help prepare for the students projects in the science fair. I am excited for our new year and plan. Please contact me with any concerns or questions.
